Have a 225 Pro XS making a he'll of a noise when running down the lake. Don't have a good way to describe it better than sounds like I put a baseball card in the spokes on my bike. It doesn't affect performance at all....I can run at all rpms with no problems just sounds terrible. Did a visual check under cowling and nothing loose etc. Is still under warranty but was just wondering what it might be and if running it another couple days until I get an opening would hurt...

Oiling and wat pressure is ok.

I don't run a mercury and can't remember without looking at it, but I have heard a mercury do that and it was vibration from a little plastic piece om side/back of motor down below cowling. I have heard several do it and it's nothing to worry about if it is what I am talking about.

That's what I was thinking at first was something loose vibrating or hitting against cowling....I'll look where you are talking in the am. Thanks

We have had a few complaints about that noise. We have concluded that at certain rpms it is reed noise or chatter. Nothign to worry about. It is only on the Pro XS model motors.

Hmmmmmm,

I hope its better than the noise we heard last time i went fishing with you in Mississippi.   Atleast the trolling motor got us back to the dock..

I think I still have the pictures of the aluminum glazed spark plug somewhere...

There was a topic similar to this one on another forum and here was what they said. I have no idea if this is the problem but its sounds possible.  Grin

Pat Goff @tff
What he is describing is a true flaw in the design, the flywheel is too light and a stainless prop will overrun the motor causing the lower unit to ratchet.
