I'm pretty proficient at turning the hook around backwards and getting it out about 80% of the time. The times I'm concerned with are the ones where you net/boat a fish and blood is running everywhere. Do you still go in after the hook or just cut the line and let it rust out.

What's best for the fish ?

Cut the hook with wire cutters as far down as you can. If your fish is in the livewell, rub some surelife catch and release on the wound if you can see it. If releasing immediately, the cutting of the hook as far down as possible is the best way if you can't turn it and remove.

get you one of these, it will cut a 6/0 hook with ease and has magnets to catch the hook point.

I'm guessing you can get that at a hardware store. Do you know if it has a specific name?

They sold those at the Arlington Fishing Show a few years ago.

They work

I bought a pair.  They cut a 5/0 Owner Wide Gap Plus like butter.  I rarely deep hook a fish but when I do I want to do what needs to be done quickly.  In C-rig season IMO they are a must.  Good investment.

JVON gave me a pair of those years ago, they are awesome!!  Saved many fish with those, they will cut even the superline hooks.

I will be adding a pair to my boat. I have had great success turning and removing but when that fails I would really like to leave as little as possible in the fish. Thanks for sharing.

I still struggle to get some deep hooks out sometimes and always worry about keeping the fish out too long. Those cutters look like a really great last resort! Thanks D.short!
