Had a frog fish hooked in the tongue last weekend. The tongue was split and bleeding, so I poured a generous amount of Dr Pepper on it (only soft drink I had). What ingredient is in the drink that stops the bleeding? The fish was as healthy as an Ox at the end of the day. Is it the caffeine? I know it is a vasoconstrictor.

I'll have to try that, every fish I've ever hooked in the tongue has died.  Even pouring Please release me on the tongue hasn't helped.

Exactly.. I told the guy I was fishing with : "this fish is gonna die, I hooked it in the tongue"... I sat there looking at it trying to decide what to do... toss it back alive, or try the soft drink trick. I had heard it was the citrus acid in Mtn Dew that did the trick... I couldnt in my mind think "why" citric acid would stop the bleeding... to me the caffiene made more sense.. so I tried with half my Dr Pepper. To my suprise, it worked. We didnt have any treatment in the water. I miss MY boat! LOL!

The one thing I have done..... That works until weigh in at least is to leave the hook in the fish until you weigh it in... It serves as a clot.

I keep a bottle of 7-Up in the boat for this exact purpose.  Not sure why it works but it sure seems to work.

7 UP has worked for me in the past.  Stoped the bleeding instantly.
