How hard is it to learn how to use a baitcaster. I have owned spinning reels and love them (Stradic's Sustain's). However I really want to learn how to use a baitcaster. I bought a Shimano Curado 200E7 got a very good price for two of them from Southwest Parts in Dallas. Any tips or advice would be great im sure i will love this forum.

You can learn to not backlash it in one afternoon.  Put on some cheap monofilament or some 80 pound braid.  Use your cast control knob and your brake shoes and adjust it according to your bait.  All it takes is time to practice.

I was the same way.. When I made the switch I had to go with left handed reels. Start with the brakes somewhat tight until you  get the hang of casting it. Then slowly back off the brake.. It took me a week and 3 spools of line to figure it out.. Buy cheap line at first and use a spinnerbait...

To start out tighten the knob so that the bait wont fall when you press cast lever. Then back the brake knob off till bait free falls slowly. You want the bait to hit the ground without the spool still spinning . Now your ready to go cast a few times . Keep light pressure on spool with thumb. I tought my 7 yr old grandgaughter this way and she does great.  Grin

Jason,
Next time you are at Bass Pro look me up and I will get with you on some of the tips the guys have talked about. Glad you were able to get those Curado's.
Also as far as the McCoys line I have ordered it directly online from either McCoys or from Brannan's. Brannan's has great service and get's it to you real quick.

get a bucket and start pitching in the back yard as well,  Tommy will give you lessons while you are there. That skill is as important as casting in the spring time.

It's also a good way to keep from hanging your tournament partner in the face with a crankbait!   Shocked

Getting hooked in the face on the backswing stung but it was when he tried to cast with bait still attached to my face that it really hit home.

I only stopped fishing long enough to pull the hooks out of my face.
